Inspectional Services
Mission Statement
The Inspectional Services Department is a comprehensive regulatory body ensuring the adherence to safety, health, quality standards, and overall quality of life, facilitating a secure and thriving environment for both residents and businesses. Through these diverse sectors, the Inspectional Services Department operates with the utmost commitment through diligent inspections, enforcement, and education.
This multi-faceted department vigilantly oversees several key areas:
Planning Board: Conducts all statutory planning and permitting functions promptly and with unbiased professionalism, and it fosters community pride, a sense of place and understanding, and confidence about the town's future direction. It also advocates sustainable growth to improve the quality of human life and lessen the burdens on wildlife and natural resources.
Building Department: Enforces building codes and regulations to ensure the structural integrity and safe construction of buildings within the town of Mendon. It is instrumental in reviewing plans, issuing building permits, and conducting inspections (building, electrical, plumbing and gas) during different phases of construction, ensuring compliance with local and state construction standards.
Zoning Enforcement: Ensures that land use complies with local zoning laws, which regulate issues like building height, density, and land use. Investigation of potential violations can be triggered by a complaint or proactive inspection.
Conservation: Responsible for protecting natural resources, including wetlands and open spaces, through various functions like permitting projects, managing conservation land, and acquiring land for passive recreation. It administers state and local laws, such as the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act, by reviewing and permitting projects in or near protected areas.
Board of Health: Plays a crucial role in public health and safety by enforcing cleanliness standards and managing waste control. It ensures that residential and commercial properties adhere to the town's health and sanitation codes, aiming at a cleaner, healthier environment through regular inspections and the enforcement of regulations related to food establishments, waste disposal, recycling, and pest control.
The Inspectional Services Department also serves to enforce all federal, state and local bylaws, including but not limited to regulations of the Massachusetts State Building Code, Minimum Sanitation Standards for Food Establishments, Minimum Standards for Fitness for Human Habitation, and the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act.
