Trash and Recycling Information

 

Trash Pick up

  • E. L. Harvey and Sons is the Towns' current trash hauler.
  • Property owners will be billed semi-annually.  Bills are due 30 days from the date the notice is mailed. 
  • Current 2020 Rates are as follows: $137/half-year (senior rate is $69, must be pre-registered, see below)
  • Payments may be made as follows:
    • Mailed to the Tax Collectors Office at PO Box 11, Mendon, MA 01756 (Please note "trash" along with your address in the memo line.  All checks must be made out to "Town of Mendon".) 
    • Dropped off in person (Cash, check, or credit to the Tax Collectors Office in Town Hall.  Office hours are Monday-Thursday 8:30am-4pm. Closed Fridays.  There is a drop off box for payments in front of Town Hall if you are unable to bring your payment during their regular office hours.
    • Trash bills cannot be paid online at this time. 
    • Unfortunately if you are paying your bill late and would like to expedite resuming service, you must bring a paid receipt from the Collector's office to the Board of Health office.  
  • If payment is NOT received, the Board of Health will assume trash service is not wanted and instruct the trash hauler not to pick up trash at that location. 
  • If you do not participate in the trash program your recycling will still be picked up.   
  • New customers must contact the Board of Health to request service.  Service will not start until payment is processed by the Collectors office.

Weekly Pick up

  • The total number bags allowed weekly is four (4) 30-gallon trash bags (50-pound limit for each bag)
  • If you choose to use a trash barrel, they cannot be any larger than 65 gallon barrels.
  • Trash barrels must be covered and bags tied. Loose trash is not allowed in barrels.
  • Trash and recycling must be out at curbside by 7:00 a.m. on your scheduled day.
  • Dogs must be restrained on the days of pick up: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 
  • If you share a common driveway or multi-family home you MUST label your containers with your address.
  • Labels for trash barrels MUST be NO SMALLER than 4 inches
  • Construction bags are NOT allowed.

Additional Trash and Sticker Fees

  • Trash sticker are for subscribers only.
  • Each additional bag (above the 4 bag limit) will require a $2.00 orange trash sticker.
  • Stickers may be purchased at the Board of Health office located at 18 Main Street in the basement of the former Taft Library next to Town Hall. They can also be purchased at the Highway Department on Saturday morning from 8:00 a.m.. until noontime ONLY by seeing the attendant at the Metal Recycling.
  • You may also mail a self-address stamp envelope with a check to the Board of Health and we will mail them back to you.
  • Payment can be cash or check. Checks are made payable to the Town of Mendon. Debit and credit cards are not accepted at this time.
  • Note, MAX limit of 8 bags for pickup (4 included in trash bill plus 4 extras with stickers)
Holidays

The ONLY days that trash pick-up will be delayed on are:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day
If any of these holidays fall on a weekend they will NOT be delayed.

Whenever a scheduled collection day falls on a holiday, that day’s collection and all remaining collections for the week will be delayed one day. Friday’s collections will be on Saturday.

Bulk items

  • Bulk items must be arranged ahead of time by calling E. L. Harvey at 800-321-3002. The fee is $20.00 per item paid directly to E. L. Harvey by either debit or credit card.

Recycling

The Board of Health offers weekly recycling to the all residents of Mendon.  Pick up is done on alternating weeks.  One week paper and corrugates is picked.  The other week plastic, glass and tin is picked up.

  • Tin - food and beverage cans and lids

    • Rinse clean and drain, flatten; labels okay. Place in container.  DO NOT BAG.

    • No scrap metal, aerosol cans, paint cans or propane tanks.  No soiled aluminum foil.  No aluminum lunch trays.

  • Glass - bottles and jars, all colors/sizes food and beverage containers

    • Rinse clean and drain, labels and lids okay.  Place in container.  DO NOT BAG.

    • No light bulbs, windows or auto glass, Pyrex, ceramics, mirrors, drinking glasses, vases or broken glass.​​

  • Plastics - soft drinks bottles, plastics jugs and bottles 1 - 7.  How do I know if a container is acceptable?  Just look for a number in the middle of a triangle.  If there is a 1 - 7, then you can recycle it.

    • Rinse clean and drain, labels and lids okay.  Place in container.  DO NOT BAG.

    • No plastic wrap or bags.  No bottles used for hazardous materials such as antifreeze and motor oil.  NO STYROFOAM (peanuts, ect.) No unmarked plastic.

  • Paper 

    • newspapers w/inserts magazines and catalogs, white paper, telephone book, cereal boxes junk mail. 

    • Place in container.  DO NOT PUT IN PLASTIC BAG

    • No plastic coated paper, plastics, carbon paper, tissue, napkins, paper cups/plates.  No food residue or soiled paper.  No cereal liners.  No paper towels. No gift wrap.

  • Corrugates

    • must be flattened. Wax free.  No larger than 2 X 2 feet.  Place in container. 

    • No pizza boxes.  No waxed boxes.  

Examples as to why trash might not be picked up

  • Not Complying with the above
  • Non-payment of bill
  • Not out by 7:00 a.m..
  • Not placed at curbside
  • Trash not bagged and is loose in a container
  • Containers not labeled if you share common drive-way or multi-family home. 
  • Label on container is too small. 
  • Trash bag weights more that 50 pounds. 

Senior Discount Program

The Board of Health offers to our qualified senior population a 50 % discount rate for trash services.  An application must be filled out and returned to the Board of Health office. Seniors will be required to apply for the discount annually.  This is to assure our information is accurate and up to date.
  • Applicant or spouse must be age 65 or older
  • Applicant or spouse must be the homeowner of the property
  • Home listed must be the primary residence of the applicant or spouse
  • Rental properties will be reviewed by the Board on a case by case basis 
  • Once approved discount will be applied to the next bill  

Mercury Thermometers, Thermostats, Button-Cell Batteries & Mercury Switches

Mercury thermometers, thermostats, button cell batteries and mercury switches may be brought to the Board of Health office in the Town Hall during regular business hours. Mercury filled thermometers may be exchanged for a new digital thermometer.
