Overview

The objective of the Mendon Historical Commission is to protect and preserve the Town's cultural character and assets, be they archaeological sites, historic buildings, open spaces, landscapes, or historic districts.

The Mendon Historical Commission meets the first Tuesday of the month, and when needed.  We meet in the Records Room (13 Main Street) at 7:00 P.M.

Note:  If the Records Room is snowed in, the Commission meets in Town Hall.

The Commission has several ongoing projects:
  • Restoration of the Olney Cook Artisan Shop (more below).
  • Cataloging historic documents in the Town Hall vault.
  • We are developing a walking tour of Mendon Village (details to come).

Olney Cook Artisan Shop

Mendon has recently acquired the deed to the old shop on Hartford Avenue East.  The Historical Commission is investigating how to preserve and restore the shop.  It's commonly referred to as "The Cobbler's Shop".  We are researching it's history, at this point there is no evidence that it was ever used as a cobbler shop.
  • February 2010:  Chenot Associates, Inc. have documented the initial state of the shop.  The PDF is available here.
  • September 2010:  The windows and the roof have been restored.  Here are a couple of photos.

The windows were removed are restored offsite.

The refurbished windows and roof insure that
the shop is now weather tight.
